The President writes . . .

Welcome back to Term 2.  Hopefully everybody has had a great chance for a rest and to catch up a bit for what promises to be another full term.

Throughout this term, the NSWPPA will continue to work with Principals and the various stakeholders involved in Public Education.  We look forward to the chance to catch up with many of our members during the string of Regional and local Area conferences which are coming up

You will have lots to do getting the term started, but some quick matters to keep in mind include:

Investing in Our Schools Program

The first round of submissions for funding on projects up to $50000 is due by the end of May. You will have a copy of some initial guidelines issued by Asset Management. These guidelines were sent as a general broadcast to schools.

Some things to keep in mind include:

  • The need to include an amount in the submission to cover the cost of contingencies and project management.  This is essential, as there any overruns in project costs would otherwise need to be met by the school.
  • Contact your Regional Asset Management Unit for further assistance. If you have difficulty getting support please let the NSWPPA know as a matter of urgency.

Along with the information in the guidelines issued by DET, there are also briefings being run by the Australian Council of State School Organisations (ACSSO). ACSSO is a national parent organisation which represents ten government school parent organisations in all States and Territories.  Information about their briefing sessions can be found at the link below.

Principals who find that they are caught in difficult circumstance as a result of issues surrounding this program should seek the urgent support of the NSWPPA.

Quality Teaching Awards

Please send nominations to Tracey Hayne (Chair, Primary Sub-group), Principal, Narellan Vale Public School, Waterworth Drive, NARELLAN VALE   NSW 2567. Ph  4647 5291    Fax  4647 4507 Email tracey.hayne@det.nsw.edu.au

Computer and email network - Service Interruption - Scheduled Technology Upgrade

You may have had difficulties with your email late last term.  As part of a program of upgrading the DET network, there is a major shutdown planned for the entire long weekend period of the Anzac Day weekend.

The DET network is one of the largest in the world, and is bigger than BigPond. This shutdown is to allow a major upgrade of the electrical infrastructure.

Between 6.00pm on Friday 22 April and 6.30am on Tuesday 26 April, there will be a major outage of DET web based services. Services will resume on Tuesday morning as normal.

Discount book purchases – Remember that NSWPPA members can purchase books through Footprint Books at special rates in a deal organised by the NSWPPA Leadership Collective.  To find out how, visit the Leadership Collective section of the NSWPPA website by clicking the link below and look for the Publications link.

Occupational Health and Safety – For your own protection, and that of those around you, please ensure that you are familiar with the requirements for OH&S, especially in relation to excursions.  There is extensive information available on the DET intranet site.

Congratulations to:

  • Easter Conference organisers and attendees. This conference brings together a range of people with a strong interest and commitment to the education of young people in schools with significant Aboriginal enrolments.
  • Moree East PS – Recipients of the 2004 Cohesive Community School Award.
  • Barnier PS – for excellent work integrating ICT into learning programs.

School Promotion

  • Schools Expo – Rosehill Gardens – Sat 14th and Sun 15th May – You received an email from Bill Bird last term with an opportunity to put in an Expo Expression of Interest if you'd like to attend and help out.
  • Regional School Promotions Officers have information about a customised "Message on Hold" facility for your school
  • If you have lost your School Promotion Plan CD (distributed last year) it is downloadable from the DET Intranet - School Promotions site

There will be more information on a regular basis as the term progresses.  I hope you all have a smooth start to the term.

Cheers
Roger Pryor
President
